You search for your business, scroll through the results, and your website is nowhere to be found. It’s frustrating, but the cause is usually one of a handful of fixable problems. If you’re asking “why is my website not showing up on Google?”, start with these seven checks.

7 Reasons Your Website Isn't Showing Up on Google

  1. Google hasn’t indexed it yet. Search site:yourdomain.com. If nothing comes up, Google hasn’t added your pages to its index. Submit your XML sitemap in Google Search Console and request indexing for your key pages.
  2. Your site is telling Google to stay away. A single setting can hide an entire site. In WordPress, check that “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” under Settings > Reading is unchecked, and look for stray noindex tags or a Disallow: / rule in robots.txt.
  3. You’re not using the words customers search for. Your pages may describe what you do in your own terms rather than the phrases people actually type into Google.
  4. Technical issues block crawling. Broken redirects, wrong canonical tags, very slow pages and poor mobile layouts all make it harder for Google to crawl and trust your site.
  5. Competitors have more authority. If other sites have more quality links, reviews and helpful content, Google will usually rank them first.
  6. Your Google Business Profile isn’t set up. For searches with local intent, the map results often appear before the regular listings. A complete, verified profile is essential for local SEO.
  7. You changed domains or URLs without redirects. When pages move without 301 redirects, the rankings and links they earned are lost.

How to Fix It

Start with Google Search Console. Its Pages report shows which URLs are indexed and why others aren’t, which usually points straight to the problem.
